Beverage Supplier To Bandits Arrested In Zamfara, Confesses To Aiding Criminal Gangs
In a video seen by SaharaReporters, various brands of soft drinks and energy beverages were displayed as Jiji confessed to regularly delivering supplies to the criminal gangs.
Operatives of a local community guard in Zamfara State have arrested one Ashiru Jiji, a suspected supplier of beverages to armed bandits operating in the forests of the northwestern state.
In a video seen by SaharaReporters, various brands of soft drinks and energy beverages were displayed as Jiji confessed to regularly delivering supplies to the criminal gangs.
“My name is Ashiru Jiji from Guromi. I was arrested with different beverages. I supply bandits in the forest,” the suspect said during interrogation. “I advise people who are still supplying them to stop it.”
Zamfara State has long been a hotspot for armed banditry and terrorist activities, with notorious warlords like Bello Turji leading ruthless campaigns of violence.
Communities in Zamfara and neighbouring Sokoto State have been subjected to repeated attacks, abductions, and livestock rustling, often with heavy ransoms demanded from already impoverished locals.
Meanwhile, the flow of logistics and daily essentials—including food, fuel, and drinks—has sustained the criminals in their hideouts and contributed to the prolonged conflict.
Local vigilantes and community guard groups have assumed a more prominent role in supporting government security forces, particularly in rural areas where state presence is limited or nonexistent.
Efforts by SaharaReporters to contact the Zamfara State Police spokesperson, ASP Yazid Abubakar, were unsuccessful, as he did not answer his calls or reply to messages sent to him.
