Bandits Take Over Federal Highways in Kogi
The recent increase in bandit attacks on the federal highways in Kogi state, particularly along the Kabba-Obajana-Lokoja road, has become a matter of great concern. Commuters are falling victim to these criminals who operate with relative impunity.
Despite Governor Yahaya Bello’s administration being celebrated for its past successes in ensuring the safety of lives and properties in the state, the ongoing events along the Obajana – Kabba axis have raised alarms. Commuters are now at the mercy of bandits who attack them at will.
Just yesterday, at approximately 5 pm, Chief Akinola Fagbemi, a Director in the federal civil service, was assaulted by bandits. Eyewitnesses reported that these criminals were dressed in army camouflage, with some in black attire. This incident occurred between the Gada Biu and Apata community.
An eyewitness account revealed that the bandits unexpectedly appeared on the road, catching travelers off guard. Fortunately, most managed to narrowly escape, although some suffered gunshot wounds.
This isn’t an isolated incident. On October 8th, individuals traveling with the remains of the Imam of Aiyegunle-Gbede, who had passed away in Lokoja, were abducted between Oshokoshoko and Apa communities. On the same day, Hon Jethro Funsho Oni was attacked, and his driver was kidnapped.
Since then, there have been ongoing reports of kidnappings on the Okene – Kabba road. In fact, just three days ago, Joshua, the son of the APC vice chairman in Egbeda ward, Kabba-Bunu local government, was kidnapped. He was released after an undisclosed ransom was paid, but approximately 8 other victims remain in captivity, waiting for their ransoms to be paid before they can be released.
Traveling on the Kabba – Lokoja road has now turned into a nightmare, with commuters enduring great hardship as they face the constant threat of bandit attacks. The authorities must address this pressing security issue.
