ASUU Gives FG 8-Day Ultimatum To Meet Demands Or Face Shutdown Of Public Universities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given President Bola Tinubu’s administration until September 6 to address their demands, with the 21-day strike notice set to expire just days after.

ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, expressed hope that all issues would be resolved before the next meeting.
“We have met to discuss all the issues and review them.
“We have given the government between now and the next meeting to see what they have done. We believe in the interest of the Nigerian child and to protect their interest if the issues were resolved,” he said.
Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, revealed that a sub-committee had been established to review the union’s demands and seek lasting solutions.
He also emphasised the government’s commitment to maintaining stability in the education system.
“For us in the ministry, we will continue from where we stopped from our earlier meeting and find ways to progress,” Mamman said.
“We share with you the desire to have stability in the education system. The federal government will continue to do what is right to have a good education. We want to ensure that our students remain on campus and the government is committed to give the university system the best it deserves.”
The decision on whether universities will shut down will be made during the September 6 meeting.
Additionally, Mamman formed an implementation monitoring committee for the NEEDS Assessment intervention fund for Nigerian public universities, addressing one of ASUU’s concerns.
The union’s demands include the release of revitalisation funds for universities, renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, the release of earned allowances for university lecturers, and the deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).
