A GLOWING TRIBUTE TO ARAKUNRIN OLUWAROTIMI ODUNAYO AKEREDOLU, SAN, CON
It is with a profound sense of reflection and gratitude that I join the good people of Ondo State and Nigeria at large in marking the first anniversary of the passing of our fearless leader, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN, CON.
The pain of his departure on December 26, 2023, remains fresh, yet his enduring legacy continues to inspire us all.
Arakunrin Akeredolu, fondly called Aketi, was not just a leader but a symbol of integrity, courage, and service. His life exemplified the rare virtues of boldness, selflessness, and an unrelenting commitment to justice and equity. As one privileged to serve under him as a two-time cabinet member, I witnessed firsthand the depth of his vision, the strength of his character, and his unshakable resolve to transform Ondo State.
Arakunrin Akeredolu was a colossus in the legal profession. Called to the Nigerian Bar in 1978, he rose to become one of the most respected legal minds in the country. His conferment as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 1998 was a testament to his brilliance, diligence, and mastery of the law. Even as a private citizen, he was known for his outspokenness, standing firm for justice, truth, and the rule of law, regardless of whose ox was gored.
Arakunrin Akeredolu’s tenure as President of the NBA from 2008 to 2010 was marked by fearless advocacy and principled leadership. He championed the independence of the judiciary, the protection of human rights, and the sanctity of the legal profession. His courage in speaking truth to power during this time earned him national recognition as a leader who could not be intimidated or compromised.
He became the voice of the voiceless, a defender of justice, and a beacon of hope for those who sought fairness in a society often plagued by inequality.
Arakunrin Akeredolu’s emergence as Governor of Ondo State on February 24, 2017, ushered in a new era of purposeful governance, visionary leadership, and unparalleled development. His administration was marked by landmark achievements that touched every sector of the state’s economy.
In infrastructure, he spearheaded the construction and rehabilitation of critical road networks across the state, connecting rural communities to urban centers and boosting economic activities. The Redemption Bridge and the Ore Interchange stand as monuments to his vision for a modern Ondo State.
In education, Arakunrin Akeredolu prioritized the welfare of teachers and the improvement of learning environments, leading to better academic outcomes. His administration’s investment in healthcare saw the revitalization of primary healthcare centers and the establishment of the Ondo State Cancer Centre, a first of its kind in the region.
However, one of his most enduring legacies remains his bold and strategic approach to security. As the architect of the Amotekun Corps, Arakunrin Akeredolu redefined grassroots security in the South West, ensuring that the lives and property of our people were protected.
His leadership in this regard not only safeguarded Ondo State but also set a precedent for regional security collaboration across Nigeria. Arakunrin Akeredolu was a leader who never shied away from difficult conversations. His outspokenness on national issues—whether on restructuring, resource control, or the need for state policing—showed his commitment to a just and equitable Nigeria. He spoke truth to power with courage and clarity, earning the admiration of allies and even opponents.
Beyond his achievements, Arakunrin Akeredolu was a compassionate leader, a devoted family man, and a mentor to many. His humility and accessibility endeared him to the people of Ondo State. He led by example, inspiring those around him to strive for excellence and service to humanity.
Today, as we remember him, we celebrate a life well lived—a life dedicated to justice, progress, and the betterment of society. Though he is no longer with us physically, his legacy lives on in the hearts of the people he served and the landmarks he left behind.
On behalf of myself and the many lives he touched, I honour his memory and pray that his vision for a prosperous, secure, and united Ondo State will continue to guide us.
Rest on, Aketi. Your light will forever shine in our hearts.
