In any responsible and people oriented government like the shared prosperity administration, the health condition of citizens cannot be overemphasized hence their health which needs to be strong as all necessary actions ought to have been put in place.
To meet the needs of the people, Checks and Balances have to be prioritized as they are foremost characteristics of a democratic government, being the best way of reviewing activities of fair minded leaders. Media professionals in a democratic setting should also be allowed to perform their watchdog role as the eyes of the people in both monitoring and cross checking the activities of political leaders to ascertain if their actions and inactions are in line with the laid down principles of government.
But in a situation where the media fails in its watchdog role to the government, the people hold them accountable and that is the reason Governor Hope Uzodimma should urgently review the duties and activities of Barrister Peter Ezeobi as Managing Director of Imo State Waste Management Agecy.
It is imperative to let the Waste Management Team know that it has failed in Waste Management in the state. Since his appointment indiscriminate refuse dump has littered streets of Imo State, breeding health hazard, scaring residents off, dampening commercial and social activities.
Thus, the process of Waste Management involves treating solid and liquid waste. The treatment also offers a variety of solutions for recycling items that are not categorized as trash into usefulness to generate revenue for the state.
Wikipedia explains Waste Management or Waste Disposal as “all activities and actions required to manage waste from its inception to its final disposal. This includes collection, transport, treatment and disposal of waste together with monitoring and regulation. It also encompasses the legal and regulatory framework that relates to waste management encompassing guidance on recycling”.
The biggest advantage of Managing Waste is that it eventually leads to a better and fresher environment. But in situations, it is not properly managed, it becomes harmful to both the environment and the human body.
And that is the reason the activities of the MD of Waste Management in Imo State ought to be reviewed either through replacement or be called to order. Because all the major streets in Imo State are full of debris.
It is obvious your Excellency, that he is either there to sabotage your efforts to make Imo the cleanest state as you promised Ndi Imo during your swearing-in ceremony or he is not competent enough to handle the assignment.
I was saddened to see some headlines in the pages of newspapers in which Imo State was referred to as the most dirty state in the federation. Imo has been turned as a dumping ground for refuse. Your Excellency, the MD is yet to do something to save the situation. His action has shown that he is not in the same page with your shared prosperity mantra of Rehabilitating, Reconstructing and Recovering Imo State.
It can also be seen that Waste Disposal Units contribute to the well-being of people by helping them become disease-free. The best part: all of this happens while the unnecessary is duly disposed of in a proper and sanitary manner.
Multiple waste disposal units are already placed at every junction of the state in a bid to prep up the process of waste disposal, but what is lacking is the maintenance of it by those saddled with the responsibility of it. Once all this is maintained such will also help to implement remarkable safety measures in the long run within Imo.
When waste is managed adequately, it does not merely eliminate the subsequent waste, but reduces the impact and the intensity of harmful greenhouse gases like carbon-di-oxide, carbon mono-oxide and methane that are often exuded from accumulated wastes in landfills.
Managing waste reduces reliance on landfills while also significantly cutting down the many factors that adversely impact our environments. His inadequacies has reminded me of my stay in Lagos State where Waste Management Disposal Team generated revenue for the state without making the environment unhealthy for the residents.
The people of Imo State are no longer safe in living with dust bins greeting them everyday because of lack of proper management of waste. Many are of the opinion that his Excellency considers to return Waste Management to ENTRACO or appoint new MD rather than having underperforming appointee who is yet to understand your vision for Imo people especially on clean and healthy environment.
