Kano APC raises panel to resolve party chairman, minister’s face-off
The All Progressives Congress in Kano State has set up a committee to reconcile aggrieved factions within the party following a threat by the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Ata, to leave the party if Abdullahi Abbas is retained as the state chairman.
The party’s Public Relations Officer, Hon. Ahmed S. Aruwa disclosed this on Monday, stating that the committee would meet to address the growing crisis.
“This is something I can’t speak on for now. We have established a committee, and it will meet today (Monday). Whatever the outcome, we will brief journalists,” Aruwa said.
He described the situation as “a delicate issue, as the minister has criticised both the Kano State party chairman and the party as a whole.”
Ata, who assumed office on November 4, 2024, made his threat during an APC caucus meeting in Fagge Local Government on Saturday where he attributed APC’s loss in the 2023 elections to statements that, in his words, “challenged the will of Allah.”
Continuing, Atah had stressed, “If they decide to retain them, we will leave, and the party will suffer another defeat,” he warned, insisting that he and his allies would not support certain individuals under any circumstances.
The former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly also claimed that APC’s 2023 gubernatorial candidates, Nasiru Gawuna and Murtala Garo, won the election, but their victory was allegedly manipulated. Despite legal action, he maintained that the divine will of Allah ultimately determined the outcome.
Another APC chieftain, who spoke anonymously, supported Ata’s position, describing Abbas as a “polarising figure” within the party.
Arewa PUNCH reports that with the APC National Executive Council and National Working Committee meetings scheduled in Abuja next week, the growing dissatisfaction within the Kano chapter signals an impending internal crisis.
The outcome of the reconciliation committee’s deliberations may determine the party’s future in the state.
