The Israeli military confirmed it conducted an airstrike against a militant cell near Tulkarm in the West Bank. Hamas media reported that a vehicle carrying fighters was hit, resulting in the death of a commander of its Tulkarm brigades.
Violence in the West Bank has been escalating, even before the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza began on October 7.
Since then, there have been frequent Israeli raids in the territory, which is part of the land Palestinians seek for their state.
Tensions in the region surged this week following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on Wednesday, a day after an Israeli strike in Beirut killed senior Hezbollah military commander Fuad Shukr.
Haniyeh’s death is one among several killings of senior Hamas figures as the Gaza conflict nears its 11th month, raising concerns of a broader regional conflict.
Hamas and Iran have accused Israel of Haniyeh’s assassination and have vowed retaliation.
Israel has neither confirmed nor denied involvement. Hezbollah, also backed by Iran, has pledged revenge as well.
