Kwara State Government has offered to immediately sign the template of the new minimum wage that the neighboring Kogi has signed if the labour unions are okay with it, an official has said.

“What is being shared around is actually a blackmail against not just the government but workers in the state themselves,” the official said, asking not to be named because of the sensitivity of the development.

“Kogi is the only state that has signed the new minimum wage so far. What they signed is 72,500 as minimum wage while the rest get a fixed amount as consequential adjustment. If the kwara state labour unions accept the Kogi template, the government is ready to sign this minute.”

The official said the state government has offered to pay something much better, but the labour has not agreed to the offer, hence the stalemate for now.

“I’m sure the labour leaders, with their great efforts, must be embarrassed by the fake news that is spreading. It is being shared by PDP, which could not even pay the 18,000 minimum wage properly and left huge unpaid salaries, pensionand gratuities,” according to the official.

“The summary is that the government has not left the negotiation table. But both sides have not reached an agreement, and it is majorly about affordability and sustainability of what is signed.”
