American Airlines Flight Diverted To Rome Due To Bomb Threat
The flight, which departed from John F. Kennedy International Airport on Saturday evening, was en route to New Delhi when the crew requested a diversion after crossing the Caspian Sea, Marca reports.
American Airlines Flight AA292, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, made an emergency diversion to Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport following a bomb threat.
The flight, which departed from John F. Kennedy International Airport on Saturday evening, was en route to New Delhi when the crew requested a diversion after crossing the Caspian Sea, Marca reports.
Italian authorities swiftly coordinated a safe landing, with two Eurofighter Typhoon warplanes escorting the aircraft as a precautionary measure.
“We immediately agreed and organized a safe landing,” said Roberto Rao, a spokesperson for the airport.
American Airlines did not disclose specific details of the threat but confirmed it was working closely with local authorities.
“We are working closely with local authorities and will provide updates as the situation develops,” the airline started.
“Safety and security are our highest priorities, and we are working closely with law enforcement agencies.”
Flight-tracking service FlightRadar24 reported that the diversion was prompted by a bomb threat.
Rao noted, “We don’t know what the security concern was, but my opinion is that it was serious enough to divert the plane, but not urgent, because we received the alert when the plane was over the Caspian Sea, a three hours flight from Rome.”
The flight landed safely at approximately 11:15 a.m. ET, where all 199 passengers disembarked via staircases. Security teams conducted thorough inspections of the aircraft and baggage before determining the next course of action.
Local officials confirmed that if security checks cleared the aircraft, it would resume its journey to New Delhi the following day. Rome’s airport operations remained unaffected throughout the incident.
The Federal Aviation Administration has yet to comment on the matter. Meanwhile, India has faced a rise in bomb threats targeting flights, with multiple emergency landings reported in recent months.
In October 2024, an Air India flight from Mumbai to New York was similarly diverted to Delhi due to a bomb threat, later determined to be a hoax.
Investigations into the American Airlines incident are ongoing, with the airline ensuring passengers that their safety remains the top priority.
