Led by its governorship candidate in the 2023 general elections in the state, Dr Ukpai Iro Ukpai, the party underscored the achievements of the state governor, Alex Otti, in making Abia the envy of all in Nigeria, assuring of assisting the governor in placing the state in higher and enviable position.

Speaking while handing over the party structure to the governor and the LP state chairman, Emmanuel Oti, Ukpai described Governor Otti as a “social-political leader” of the state, explaining, “Today, we are here to consolidate the promise I made (of assisting the governor). Otti has brought smiles to the faces of Abians and has also placed the state on the map politically, socially and spiritually.

“As it is now, others copy from Abia and his leadership has come to be. We are all going to put hands together to make sure LP works and to make Abia a state to copy.”

His running mate during the election, Bar. Chiedozie Josiah, and the NNPP state coordinator, David Urum, described the state governor as “a great man who is a servant,” not faking his leadership and one who is doing wonders and offering other leaders a lot to learn from.

Fielding questions from newsmen afterwards, Ukpai expressed his feelings about collapsing NNPP into the Labour Party, stating, “There is nothing like feeling bad, dejected, embarrassed or unhappy about moving to LP. We defected, not deflated.”

Responding, Governor Otti recalled that his two previous mandates were stolen “until God came and said, it is enough.” adding, “We don’t discriminate in government and the party. Joining (LP) late does not make one inferior, otherwise, I wouldn’t have won.”

Otti added that Abia State would remain focused, insisting that “the welfare of the people, not that of the rich men is important to us.”

Earlier while receiving the the defectors into the LP, the state chairman, Oti, said others are coming into LP because of Governor Otti’s ideology and stance in terms of development in the state and beyond, while the Special Adviser to the state governor on Political Matters. Rt. Hon. Acho Obioma expressed his excitement that the NNPP is collapsing into the LP because of what they have seen, charging the defectors to join hands with Otti to move the state forward.
