…Expands Social Safety Net for Most Vulnerable
The deputy governor of Taraba state, Aminu Alkali, has announced that the state is expanding its social safety net to reach more vulnerable persons across the state.
He noted that the state government is particularly interested in alleviating the sufferings of vulnerable households through the disbursement of livelihood grants.
He made this statement at the weekend in Jalingo, the state capital, during the disbursement of N524 million to 10,409 persons.
Alkali expressed optimism that with the current trajectory and focus of the state government, Taraba would soon have no record of vulnerable persons.
He said, “The first and second sets of beneficiaries of these grants were 2,680 youths and women.
“This third tranche targets 10,449 beneficiaries across the 16 local government areas of the state and 2 special development areas.
“We are supporting them to expand their small and medium enterprises and ensure the local economy is revived to create more jobs.
“With what we are doing, we hope that in the next one year, Taraba will have no record of vulnerable persons.”
He further urged the beneficiaries to use the funds judiciously.
The state Commissioner for Co-operative and Poverty Alleviation, James Habu, who also spoke, said beneficiaries were given between N50,000 each as support.
He added that in the first phase, N101.9 million naira was disbursed to beneficiaries, while N100 million was disbursed during the second phase.
According to him, “the state government increased the number of beneficiaries during the third phase to over 10,000, leading to the disbursement of N524 million.
“This government is willing to take out poverty, and we are committed to this course.”
