Kano State Independent Electoral Commission has announced the rescheduling of the local government election to October 26.

The commission had earlier scheduled the polls for November 30.

The KANSIEC Chairman, Prof. Sani Malumfashi, who announced the change of date at a news conference on Friday, said the decision is in recognition and conformity with the recent Supreme Court judgment that granted autonomy to Local Governments.

“In recognition and conformity with the recent Supreme Court decision, the mutual agreement between States and Federal Governments and upon the expiration of October deadline on Local Government Financial Autonomy, the Commission is justifiably impelled to reschedule the already scheduled Local Government Election to 26th October 2024 as against 30th November 2024.

“The commission, therefore, implored you the stakeholders to understand the compelling situation and give the commission your most deserving support and cooperation,” he said.

Prof. Malumfashi explained that based on the revised timetable, campaigns would commence from September 1 to 12 midnight on October 26.

According to him, party primaries and submission of names of candidates to the commission begin on September 3 and end on September 26.

He added that sales of forms would begin on September 15 to close on September 26, adding that submission of all completed forms would commence on September 27 and end on October 8.

“Verification of candidates by the commission and submission of names of political parties agents starts on October 9 and stops on October 14,” he said.

He disclosed that election results by the commission would be announced on Sunday, October 27.

Malumfashi also states that the commission had slated November 9 for rerun elections.

In July 2024, the Chief Whip of the Senate, Ali Ndume, said that securing the financial autonomy for local governments has been the greatest achievement of President Bola Tinubu since he assumed office in 2023.
