The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), under the Federal Ministry of Health, has declined to comply with the National Assembly’s directive to reopen its portal and resume verification of nurses and midwives in accordance with its previous guidelines, effectively ignoring the legislative body’s instruction.

It had reported how United States and Canada particularly rejected job applications by Nigerian Nurses after government suspended licence verification Services.
The indefinite suspension and closure of Portal for licence verification continued despite the National Assembly’s resolution directing otherwise.
The NASS in a letter through the Clerk to the Registrar, Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria which was dated 13th August, 2024 with Ref: NASS/CNA/35/VOL. 4/786, directed that verification should continue pending the conclusion of investigation by the House Committee on Health Institutions.
The letter was titled: Negative Portrayal Of The House Resolution By The Nursing And Midwifery Council Of Nigeria (HR. 53/07/2024).
It partly read: “the House of Representatives on Tuesday, 23 July, 2024, deliberated on the above Motion and consequently resolved to: “urge the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria to open its site and commence verification of Nurses and Midwives based on its former Guidelines (not the revised Guidelines for Verification dated February 7. 2023), pending the conclusion of investigation by the House Committee on Health Institutions.
“This letter conveys the above House Resolution to you for further necessary action.
“A copy of the Votes and Proceedings of Tuesday, 23 July, 2024, containing the text of the Resolution is attached to this letter for your guidance.
“Please accept the assurances of my highest consideration.”
The letter was signed by Clerk to the National Assembly, Sani Magaji Tambawal.
