US Presidential Race: Kamala Harris Holds Narrow Lead Over Trump, Poll Finds

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll indicates that Vice President Kamala Harris has taken a slight lead over Republican Donald Trump, with a two-percentage-point advantage.
This marks a shift from the previous week’s poll, which showed President Joe Biden trailing Trump by two points before he announced his departure from the presidential race on Sunday, effectively endorsing Harris as his successor, according to Reuters.
The poll conducted on Monday and Tuesday reveals that Vice President Harris holds a slight lead over Republican Donald Trump, with 44% support compared to Trump’s 42%.
This poll follows recent events, including the Republican National Convention where Trump accepted the nomination and President Joe Biden’s announcement that he is ending his campaign and endorsing Harris.
It’s important to note that the difference between Harris and Trump’s support falls within the poll’s 3-percentage-point margin of error.
Previous polls showed a tied race on July 15-16 and a one-point lead for Trump on July 1-2, also within the margin of error.
While national polls provide valuable insights into public opinion, the outcome of presidential elections is often determined by a small number of competitive states in the Electoral College.
A pollster associated with Trump’s campaign noted that any increase in Harris’ support may be short-lived, attributing it to increased media attention following her candidacy announcement.
The recent online poll of 1,241 U.S. adults, including 1,018 registered voters, found that 56% of registered voters perceive Kamala Harris as ‘mentally sharp and able to deal with challenges’, compared to 49% for Donald Trump and 22% for Joe Biden.
Also, 80% of Democratic voters hold a favourable view of Biden, while 91% hold a favourable view of Harris.
On Sunday, US President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race, bowing to mounting pressure from within his own party and media scrutiny over his perceived decline in performance.
Biden’s decision came in the wake of a widely criticised debate against his Republican challenger Donald Trump, which many deemed to be a stark illustration of the incumbent’s diminishing faculties.
Faced with questions over his ability to continue leading the nation, the president conceded defeat, choosing instead to focus on serving the remaining months of his term in office.
