Pro-Wike Rivers State Lawmakers Ask Police To Arrest Local Government Caretaker Chairmen Appointed By Gov Fubara
Ignatius Onwuka, Chairman of the House Committee on Local Governments, raised concerns about the ongoing activities of the CTC Chairmen despite the Supreme Court’s decision.
Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly faction led by Martin Amaewhule, who are loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyeson Wike, have called on the Nigeria Police Force to arrest the Caretaker Committee Chairmen (CTC) who continued their tenure despite a Supreme Court ruling declaring their positions illegal.
This comes following the Supreme Court’s recent ruling in a case between the Attorney General of the Federation and the Attorneys General of the 36 states, which declared the Caretaker Committee Chairmen illegal.
The Supreme Court judgment also granted local government areas in the country full financial autonomy.
Following the apex court’s ruling, Major Jack, the House Leader of the Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly faction during the plenary session on Monday, presented the Certified True Copy of the Supreme Court judgment to the speaker.
Ignatius Onwuka, Chairman of the House Committee on Local Governments, raised concerns about the ongoing activities of the CTC Chairmen despite the Supreme Court’s decision.
“Some impostors are parading themselves as caretaker committee chairmen and members in the 23 local governments.
“This worries me because this House amended the Local Government law, mandating that only elected officials should manage local government activities,” he stated.
Onwuka added, “These impostors are harassing innocent citizens and imposing levies and rates. We felt it was necessary to bring these activities to your attention.”
In another statement, Ofiks Kagbang, representing Andoni Constituency, accused Governor Fubara of instigating anarchy.
He said, “The governor is inviting anarchy by maintaining these caretaker committee chairmen who continue to collect levies and rates despite the Supreme Court’s ruling.”
Following a vote, Amaewhule urged the police to arrest the caretaker committee chairmen wherever they are found.
He also directed the Chairman of the House Committee on Information to inform the state residents of their decision.
