Just In : Senate Proposes Bill To Establish Local Government Electoral Commission

The Nigerian Senate has proposed a bill that may lead to the establishment of the Local Government Independent Electoral Commission.
The proposed law was sponsored by Senator representing Niger East, Sani Musa and read during plenary on Thursday.
This proposal came about a week after the Supreme Court ordered the Nigerian government to stop paying allocations for local governments to the state government from the federation account.
The Nigerian government, through the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Egbeyemi (SAN), had dragged all governors of the 36 states before the apex court to fight for autonomy.
The apex court also ordered the federal government of Nigeria to withhold allocations of local government under caretaker committees appointed by governors.
The court had said, “An order that henceforth no state government should be paid monies standing to the credit of the local government councils.”
“An order for immediate enforcement and compliance with these orders by the state governments and successive governments henceforth,” the court had further held.
