Just In : Australia Announces New Visa Rules To Support Foreign Skilled Workers

The Australian government has unveiled significant changes to visa conditions for skilled workers, aimed at enhancing labour market mobility and addressing unfair labour practices.

From July 1, 2024, holders of three specific visas – Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482), Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457), and Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (provisional) visa (subclass 494) – will have a six-month window to secure new sponsorship, apply for a new visa, or depart the country if they cease employment with their sponsoring employer.

The new regulations grant these visa holders up to 180 days of flexibility at a time, with a cumulative maximum of 365 days during their visa period. During this period, they are allowed to work for other employers, even if it’s not related to their original sponsorship nomination.

This provision is designed to support skilled migrants in finding new job opportunities while they navigate their options.

The changes are intended to promote the integration and contribution of skilled migrants to the Australian workforce, providing them with greater job security and flexibility.

The authorities emphasized that the reforms will benefit both existing visa holders and those granted a visa from July 1, 2024 onwards. Crucially, any periods spent without work for their sponsor before the effective date will not count towards the new time frames.

By introducing these measures, the Australian government hopes to position itself as an attractive destination for global talent, ensuring that skilled migrants can continue to make a meaningful contribution to the economy while simultaneously benefiting improved job security and flexibility.
