Govt warns, vows to seal Filling Stations over price hikes, product adulteration, meter tampering
The Anambra State Government has issued a firm warning to petroleum marketers, cautioning against price hikes, product adulteration, and meter tampering.
The Commissioner for petroleum and mineral resources, Anthony Ifeanya stressed the government’s readiness to monitor filling stations rigorously and take decisive action against offenders.
Reports indicate some stations are selling petrol at exorbitant prices, up to N970 per liter, and engaging in illicit practices.
The government aims to curb these activities through strict enforcement and legal consequences.
This crackdown follows numerous complaints about tampered meters and fuel quality issues. Observations reveal limited product availability, leading to a drastic increase in transportation fares.
It was observed on Sunday, May 12, that most filling stations were not selling the product while the few ones dispensing were besieged by motorists and other users of the product.
The development made transportation fares increase rapidly above 100 percent as passengers now pay N300 for a journey that they initially paid N150.
Investigation revealed that most filling stations operating in Onitsha, Nnewi, Ekwulobia, Obosi, and some parts of Awka, sold above N970 per litre.
While some stations sell petrol above N970 per liter, NNPC facilities offer it at lower prices.
