The Imo state chapter of National Agency For Prohibition of Trafficking In Persons (NAPTIP), led by it commander Mr Ernest Ogbu over the weekend visited Akwukuma girls secondary school in celebration of the 2021 human trafficking day celebration.
It was gathered that, in every 30th July of every year, it earmarked to celebrate the human trafficking day, the occasion as explained by Mr Ernest Ogbu was to enlighten people on the need to say No to this Mayhem that has caused pains to some families as well as has destroyed many great destinies.
According to him, human trafficking is the transportation of people from one place to another, for the purpose of exploitation while describing it to be a modern day slavery.
Speaking to the students Mr Ernest Ogbu, listed out some strategies used to apprehend Human traffickers which is through polices ,prevention, Protection, perscution, partnership, they spokesperson of the body in Imo state, urged the students to report to NAPTIP office of any crime pertaining to human trafficking
Accordingly, he unveiled the Theme of this year’s World Day Against Trafficking in Persons as ” Victims Voices Leads The Way” and stated their role is important in listening to victims, survivors and protection of the weak and vulnerable among the society.
Mr Ogbu further stated that Girls Secondary School, Akwakuma has been selected for Education and Sensitisation on the dangers of human trafficking as knowledge is power.
He therefore sought the contributions of members on how to make the day memorable which elicited responses from the organisations present.
He reiterated the need to uphold the already existing relationship at the center and that no single Agency can comprehensively combat crime hence the need to work together for greater success.
The participants while acknowledging the high incidences of human trafficking in the State pledged to work together in the interest of the State and resolved as follows:
i. That as first responders to victims and cases of human trafficking, all cases relating to Trafficking in Persons must be reported to NAPTIP as the statutory authority and Mandate in the subject area.
In attendance were representatives of law enforcement agencies Imo State Command and Civil Society Organisation’s namely: Nigeria Immigration Service,(NIS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC), Alliance for Africa and God’s Light Ministry, Imo State.
