The Federal Government of Nigeria has revealed plans to set up a mortgage scheme for Nigerians in the US, UK, & Canada.

 

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arch. Ahmed Dangiwa, has announced plans to launch a mortgage scheme for Nigerians residing in the United States of America,United Kingdom, and Canada in February 2024.

The announcement came during a meeting with the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and other Management Staff at his office in Abuja.

In a statement signed by Gabriel Odu from the Protocol Unit, NiDCOM, the Minister outlined the objective of the Diaspora Mortgage Housing Scheme, stating,

 

“The overall goal is to ensure that as our brothers and sisters sojourn abroad, they also have a decent shelter over here in Nigeria to call their home.”

 

Arch. Dangiwa further highlighted the commitment of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) to its tripartite mandate, including the Diaspora City Project in collaboration with NIDCOM, FHA, and FCT.

The minister also revealed that, “the project is situated at Maitama 2, Abuja, spanning over 675 hectares of land”

Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa commended Minister Dangiwa for his dedication and participation in launching the Diaspora Mortgage Scheme at the Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit. She expressed the enthusiasm of Nigerians in the Diaspora for both the mortgage scheme and the forthcoming Diaspora smart city in Kabusa, Maitama, FCT.

With approximately 20 million Nigerians in the Diaspora, remitting an average of over $24 billion annually to support the Nigerian economy, the initiative aims to provide housing solutions for Nigerians abroad while fostering economic contributions to the homeland.
