Covid-19: ODIEC stands on the scheduled date for Ondo LG poll

The Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission, has declared that the forthcoming local government election in the state, would go ahead as scheduled.

The state government had banned all political activities in the state, in a bid to prevent the outbreak of the coronavirus disease.

ODIEC had fixed April 18, 2020, for the conduct of the chairmanship and councillorship election in the state.

The Commissioner in charge of Media and Publicity of the ODIEC, Mr. Rotimi Olorunfemi, who spoke in Akure, said the commission had put in place safety measures to ensure that the exercise went smoothly.

According to him, the precautionary measures had been put in place to prevent the transmission of the deadly diseases on the day of the election.

He said, ā€œThe Commission has procured hand sanitizers and flowing plastic water cans among others which have been dispatched to all of the area offices in the 18 local government areas of the state including offices at the headquarters in Akure.

ā€œThe hand sanitizers and other safety measures would be made available at each polling unit for regular washing of hands on election day.

ā€œThe Commission, on Election Day would put in place crowd control measures in each polling unit and collation centre by not attending to not more than 20 people including the officials of the commission at a time to forestall possible spread of the disease.ā€

Olorunfemi, explained that hand gloves would be distributed to the officials of the commission to have their hands protected.

He said the commission had made arrangements to collaborate with the state ministry of health to provide health facilities at each collation center as part of safety measures.

He also gave assurance that the safety measures put in place by the commission would prevent the spread of the disease on election day.
