Just In : Minister Resigns, Gives Reason
Greece’s merchant marine minister announced his resignation on Monday in response to the tragic death of a passenger who was forcefully pushed off a ferry.
The incident, captured in a widely circulated video, showed 36-year-old Antonis Kargiotis attempting to board the ferry in Athens port. Crew members repeatedly prevented him from doing so, pushing him back each time.
Tragically, Kargiotis fell into the sea, and despite the pleas of fellow passengers, the ferry departed as scheduled. His body was later recovered from the water.
Expressing profound dismay at the actions of the Blue Horizon ferry crew, Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis conveyed his resignation in a heartfelt letter posted on social media.
A government spokesperson confirmed that the prime minister has accepted Varvitsiotis’s resignation.
The captain of the ferry, along with three crew members, now face criminal charges in connection with Kargiotis’s untimely passing.
