Oligui, head of the elite Republican Guard, led the coup last week against President Ali Bongo Ondimba, whose family had ruled since 1967. O

ligui pledged to preserve the republican regime and democracy’s achievements.

He plans to hold free and transparent elections after a transitional period, as well as amnesty “prisoners of conscience.” Western countries and organizations have condemned the coup, citing concerns over election irregularities.
