Col. Chinyere Obi (retd.), a former member of the Labour Party, has accused the party of abandoning her after she was shot by suspected political thugs at her polling unit in her village in Imo State’s Ideato South Local Government Area.

In an interview with The Punch, the Peter Obi supporter stated that she was deeply involved in the campaign, even inviting the Arewa group from the 19 northern states for mobilization.

Despite her efforts, she received no support from the LP chairman and had to personally provide food and transport fares to the group. At the grassroots level, she purchased 200 bags of rice, noodles, bags, customised shirts, and other items for distribution

The painful part for her was that no one from the party came to sympathize with her when she was shot. She expressed disappointment and said she sold all her property to campaign for Peter Obi. She believes that if it had been someone like Tinubu, she would not be suffering in this manner, as they would have shown concern and provided assistance.

Narrating the incident, she explained that she was shot while defending the Labour Party at her polling unit. A guy approached her and mentioned that they had been observing her activities in the community, including distributing rice and promoting the LP. Without warning, he pulled out a gun and shot her in the leg.

Since the incident, she has been treating herself with support from the Labour Party. She even sold her SUV for a fraction of its value to pay for the hospital bills and has been borrowing money from people to cover her medical expenses. She expressed frustration at the lack of response from the LP when she reached out to them for financial assistance, except for two individuals who sent her small amounts of money.

Col. Chinyere Obi stated that she just returned home two weeks ago and is still undergoing treatment for her injuries. She expressed regret that the party, which she had supported so passionately, turned its back on her in her time of need
