The grenade detonated instantly, killing the man on the spot and injuring three bystanders.
An explosion rocked the Taiwo Street area of Idi-Araba in Mushin, Lagos State, on Thursday, April 3, 2025, leaving one person dead and three others injured.
The incident, confirmed by the Lagos State Police Command, occurred after a scavenger reportedly discovered military-grade grenades among scrap materials and attempted to dismantle one.
The grenade detonated instantly, killing the man on the spot and injuring three bystanders.
Authorities said they received a distress call around 1:30 p.m., alerting them to a suspected bomb explosion in the area. Officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit in Ikeja were immediately deployed to the scene.
Preliminary investigations suggest the explosion was accidental and triggered during the scavenger’s attempt to tamper with the grenade.
The injured individuals were quickly rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, while the body of the deceased was deposited at a public morgue for autopsy.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, who spoke to SaharaReporters on Friday, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are ongoing to determine how the military explosives ended up in civilian hands.
He urged the residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious items or activities to the authorities.
