Police Operatives Kill Suspected Vandals Targeting Pipelines In Rivers State For Explosion
The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, disclosed this during a press briefing in Port Harcourt, stating that the operation was part of ongoing joint security efforts to combat criminal activities in the state.
An unspecified number of suspected vandals were killed while attempting to sabotage a pipeline in the Aluu and Rumuekpe communities of Rivers State, the police confirmed on Tuesday.
The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, disclosed this during a press briefing in Port Harcourt, stating that the operation was part of ongoing joint security efforts to combat criminal activities in the state.
“The joint security forces successfully thwarted an attempt by miscreants to vandalise a pipeline, leading to the death of the vandals who sought to detonate it,” Adepoju said.
He noted that the swift response of security personnel at the Allu-Rumuekpe axis of Ikwerre Local Government Area (LGA) on March 16 prevented a potential explosion.
Further security operations in Onelga LGA on March 19 led to the arrest of two suspects caught with four dynamites, detonating pods, and other components used for Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
On March 21, a raid on a kidnappers’ hideout along Omoku Road in Ahoada East LGA resulted in the arrest of eight suspected kidnappers and the rescue of six hostages.
Items recovered included two pump-action guns, two locally made pistols, four single-barrel firearms, live ammunition, and communication equipment.
Adepoju also announced the establishment of a State Operations Control Room to enhance real-time surveillance and rapid response to security threats.
He warned against further acts of pipeline vandalism and other crimes, vowing that offenders would be identified, arrested, and prosecuted.
To curb criminal activities, the police will begin impounding unregistered vehicles across the state from next week, he added
