ISWAP Terrorists Attack Malari Police Station In Borno, Engage Nigerian Troops In Gun Battle

Suspected Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP) terrorists launched an attack on Malari Police Station in Borno State, resulting in a gun battle with troops of the Nigerian military on Operation Hadin Kai.
The assault took place around 1am on Wednesday when the Joint Task Force (JTF) Northeast headquarters received a distress call about the attack.
“Upon receiving the information, our troops swiftly mobilised, engaged the terrorists, and successfully repelled the attack, allowing the police Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) to withdraw safely,” a source told Zagazola Makama, a counterinsurgency expert.
The terrorists had attempted to seize the APC, intending to use it for a subsequent IED attack on security forces.
Despite intense gunfire, the brave troops of the 222 Battalion held their ground and secured the police station.
There were no casualties among security forces, though three APC tyres were damaged.
The number of terrorist casualties remains unconfirmed, but traces of blood were observed along their withdrawal route.
Military sources confirmed that troops have maintained dominance over the area.
Further operations will be conducted at first light to track down the attackers.
Meanwhile, SaharaReporters reported in January how ISWAP militant group claimed responsibility for the attack on a Civilian Joint Task Force base in Borno State.
According to a statement released by the group, they seized various weapons, including 7.62x39mm AK magazines and ammunition, during the raid. The statement also included photos showing ISWAP members firing indiscriminately at the base.
This comes hours after the terror group killed a yet-to-be confirmed number of Nigerian soldiers, with some still reportedly missing following an attack on a Forward Operating Base in the Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State.
According to security sources who spoke to SaharaReporters, the incident occurred on Saturday, January 4, 2025.
The sources added that the terrorists razed many buildings and military operational vehicles during the attack that lasted over two hours.
