Court Stops Enugu Community’s Igweship Election
The Enugu State High Court has issued an order preventing the Mburubu Town Union from conducting, observing, or assisting in any election for the Traditional Igweship Stool of Mburubu Community in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.
In a ruling delivered on Wednesday, Justice R. O. Odugu granted an interim injunction prohibiting the respondents, their agents, or any representatives from facilitating any election in Mburubu Community, pending the outcome of the motion on notice.
Reports indicate that the order followed a motion ex-parte filed by Chief Edwin Onwuka, the Secretary of Mburubu Igwe’s Cabinet, and Chief Sylvanus Njoku on behalf of the Igwe’s Cabinet of Mburubu. They sought to restrain the Mburubu Town Union, the 6th respondent in the suit, or any of their representatives from holding an election in the community.
The suit, marked E/162M/2025, includes the Attorney-General of Enugu State and the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs as respondents, alongside Hon. Emmanuel Edeh, Mr. Nwosu John, Mr. Ogbonna Igbudu, and Mr. Nwankwo Samuel, who represent the Mburubu Town Union (MTU). The MTU had previously scheduled an election in the community for Friday, February 28, 2025.
The applicants, represented by their counsel, Nnamdi B. Aneke Esq., argued against the planned election, highlighting unresolved issues concerning the selection process, particularly regarding the community’s constitution.
The motion, further supported by an affidavit submitted by Chief Ezekwe Onwuka of Uhuagu Village, Mburubu, was granted by Justice R. O. Odugu, who adjourned the case to March 6, 2025, for additional hearing.
