Adeola Ogunmola Sowemimo (born October 16, 1990) is a Nigerian aircraft pilot and a trailblazer in the aviation industry.
Early Life and Education
Adeola was born in Kaduna State, Nigeria, and hails from Ogbomoso, Oyo State. She is the youngest of three children born to Ogunmola Ademola and Aweni Deborah Ogunmola. Her early education spanned multiple schools due to regional challenges, starting at Brighton International School in Kaduna and concluding at Temitope Nursery and Primary School in Ibadan in 2000. She completed her secondary education at First Baptist Model High School in Kaduna in 2007.
Her passion for aviation led her to the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology in Zaria, where she honed her piloting skills. In 2011, she graduated from the U.S.-based Sunrise Aviation Academy.
Career Achievements
In 2018, at the age of 28, Adeola made history by becoming the first Nigerian female pilot to fly the Boeing 787 Dreamliner for Qatar Airways, operating long-haul international routes. She is also recognized as the first Nigerian female pilot to fly the Boeing 767 aircraft across the Atlantic Ocean, joining the ranks of Kenya’s Captain Irene Koki and Ethiopia’s Captain Amsale Gulau.
Her achievements are even more remarkable given the challenges women face in securing pilot roles in the Middle East, making her a symbol of resilience and excellence in the field.
Personal Life
Adeola is married to Seunfunmi Olamilekan Sowemimo and balances her career with family life. Her journey serves as an inspiration, demonstrating that with dedication and perseverance, barriers in traditionally male-dominated fields can be overcome.
