Prioritise education, Obasanjo tells Tinubu
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called on the Federal Government, led by President Bola Tinubu, to prioritise sustainable funding for education in Nigeria.
Speaking on Tuesday at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, during the 70th birthday celebration of the Vice Chancellor of Bells University, Oludele Ojediran, Obasanjo stressed the need for strategic government intervention to ensure education remains a cornerstone for national development.
“The President Tinubu and the Federal Government must find a means to finance education for its sustainability. Government at all levels must also empower the youths to become provider of job opportunities,” Obasanjo said.
Lauding LAUTECH for its contributions to academic excellence, Obasanjo commended the institution for producing accomplished administrators, including Professors Adeyemi and Ojediran, who have both served as Vice Chancellors of Bells University.
The former President reiterated his advocacy for “education for service rather than for profit,” affirming his commitment to sustaining the legacy of education in Nigeria.
In his remarks, the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye, praised Obasanjo’s enduring contributions to education and agriculture in the country. Addressing Professor Ojediran, the monarch encouraged him to leverage his expertise in agricultural engineering to uplift the agricultural sector in Ogbomoso.
“I will provide suitable land for farming to anybody who is interested in farming in Ogbomoso and its environment,” Oba Olaoye promised, emphasizing his commitment to fostering agricultural growth in the region.
The occasion highlighted the intersection of education and agriculture as pivotal areas for national progress, underscoring the roles of both government and individuals in driving sustainable development.
