Ohaneze Ndigbo gets new president

A new President-General has emerged in Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, with Nze Fidelis Ozichukwu Chukwu appointed to complete the remaining tenure of Imo State, which ends on January 10, 2025. This development follows a series of events that began with the death of Ambassador Professor George Obiozor, the former President-General, in 2022.

To fill the vacancy, Imo State presented Chief Engr. Dr. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu as a replacement, and Iwuanyanwu was sworn in on April 30, 2023. However, Iwuanyanwu passed away on July 25, 2024, and was buried on November 1, 2024. Consequently, the Imo State chapter of Ohanaeze, led by Barrister C.J. Ihemedu, nominated Nze Ozichukwu Chukwu to complete the tenure, a decision based on the doctrine of necessity.

The motion for Ozichukwu’s adoption was moved by Eze Cletus Ilomuanya, Chairman of the Imo Council of Elders, and seconded by Chief Simon Okeke. Eze Ilomuanya praised Ozichukwu as a cerebral thinker with outstanding qualities, highlighting his extensive educational background, including prestigious institutions such as Oxford University, Harvard University, and the University of Lagos. Ozichukwu has held significant roles in both the public and private sectors, including serving as Managing Director of Nigeria Merchant Bank and as a founding member of the Bureau of Public Enterprises.

Ozichukwu’s numerous contributions to society include involvement in various development initiatives and recognition from the Catholic Church, where he was awarded the Worthy Knighthood of St. Mulumba (KSM) and Papal Knighthood of Saint Sylvester (KSS). His leadership experience also includes serving as National Vice Chairman/Chairman of the PDP South East Zone and being a Fellow of the Institute of Management Consultants.

The appointment of Nze Ozichukwu has been widely welcomed by key figures from across the Igbo community, including notable politicians, academics, and cultural leaders. Among those who expressed support were the Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Dr. Peter Mbah, Rear Admiral Allison Madueke, and Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe. Many Imeobi members have praised Ozichukwu’s courage, integrity, and principled approach to leadership, with a consensus that his leadership will ensure a smooth and credible transition to a new President-General from Rivers State.

The emergence of Nze Fidelis Ozichukwu Chukwu as the new President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo represents a new chapter in the organization’s leadership, with hopes for continued progress and unity within the Igbo community.
