Federal Govt reveals when FCT, States will begin full implementation of Minimum Wage
The Federal Government has assured that many states, along with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), will fully implement the new national minimum wage by January 2025.
This announcement was made by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, during a meeting at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja with a delegation from the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCN) on Thursday.
Dingyadi called for patience from workers, explaining that his ministry was still gathering information to determine which states have fully complied with the new wage structure and which have not.
According to reports from the workers, around four or five states have yet to meet the new wage requirements, while others have made partial progress in its implementation.
The Minister said: “The FCT said it will comply with the new minimum wage in January. But your FCT chapter is saying that they want it done right now. I am not sure whether that is fair.
“Many states are going to do it in January. So, I don’t know why your FCT chapter is not accepting the same January. So, since you have raised this issue, we are going to look at the matter once again and see what could be done, particularly about the federal agencies you talked about.
“You have not given us the names. We can be better guided with a list of those who have not complied, to see what we can do.”
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, acknowledged the concerns raised by the delegation, including those related to the Office of the Accountant General and the Federal Civil Service Commission, issues that the ASCN has been actively working to address.
He assured the delegation that all these matters would be thoroughly examined and resolved in an amicable manner.
Expressing his gratitude for the delegation’s visit, the Minister reiterated his commitment to doing everything necessary to maintain peace, stability, and harmony within the civil service.
He also urged the union leadership to set a positive example by approaching issues peacefully and bringing them to the table for constructive dialogue and resolution as they arise.
