The fire began at about 2am on Tuesday after electricity was restored to the area, at a time all the shops were closed, according to an eyewitness.

The intervention of fire service personnel helped to prevent the fire from spreading to residential areas.

An unnamed official of the state fire service said the fire was put out following a distress call.

Last year, several goods and properties were lost to a fire at the same market. The fire occurred around 1am and was not put out until 4am on June 10, 2023.

In 2022, over 300 shops were destroyed in a fire outbreak at Nguru market in Yobe.

According to Ibrahim Adam, chairman of the traders association, the fire started around 7am.

Adam said the fire was triggered by high voltage, which destroyed shops containing fabrics, used clothes, shoes, provisions, and other items.
