ANigerian police officer has allegedly shot a motorcyclist dead in Minna, the Niger State capital, while dispersing some suspected thugs.

SaharaReporters gathered that the incident occurred when a team of security personnel attempted to disperse some allegedly violent youths making a scene in the city.

One of the officers allegedly fired a gunshot that struck the tricycle rider.

The incident occurred at the popular M.I Wushishi Eastern Bypass Road, a heavily trafficked route due to road construction in Minna.

Sources had told SaharaReporters that the thugs involved were reportedly illegal miners who had been engaged in violent clashes for three consecutive days.

Meanwhile, the M.I Wushishi Eastern Bypass and the NNPC Station Western Bypass had become the only alternatives for road users, leading to a gridlock.

When contacted by SaharaReporters, Wasiu Abiodun, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Niger State Command, said: “Reports were received this morning at about 9am of some miscreants bearing dangerous weapons fighting around Kafintella and Angwa-Kampani, while police patrol teams of Tudun-Wada and Maitumbi Divisions mobilised to the area to restore normalcy.”

He continued, “During the process, one person was reported to have lost his life. Suddenly, tricycle riders mobilised to block the road while reinforcement was dispatched, and the road was cleared, normalcy was restored.”

Abiodun confirmed that investigations had “commenced to uncover the circumstances surrounding the victim’s death; and not killed by the police.”
