The United States Marshals Service (USMS) has offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. Olawusi, believed to be in Nigeria, faces charges that stem from a horrific incident that occurred in 2017 in Providence, Rhode Island, which led to the death of his child.
Olalekan Abimbola Olawusi, a 48-year-old Nigerian man, has been declared a fugitive by U.S. authorities, with a reward of $25,000 being offered for any information that leads to his capture. Olawusi is facing charges of first-degree murder and two counts of inflicting serious bodily injury to a child, charges that stem from a tragic incident involving his infant son on April 3, 2017, in Providence, Rhode Island.
On the day of the incident, emergency personnel arrived to find Olawusi’s 3-month-old son in critical condition, bleeding from both the mouth and nose. The infant was rushed to the hospital in cardiac arrest, requiring immediate resuscitation to restore a pulse. Upon further medical evaluation, doctors discovered that the child had suffered from a series of severe injuries, including a skull fracture, subdural hematoma, and significant brain damage, as well as multiple fractures to the ribs, clavicle, legs, and arms.
The medical examinations revealed 18 separate injuries to the child’s body, which were in various stages of healing, suggesting prolonged abuse. The infant was placed on life support, but tragically, he passed away on October 31, 2017, six months after the incident.
Initially, Olawusi was arrested on April 20, 2017, and charged with first-degree child abuse. However, he was released later that same day and subsequently fled the country. The charge of murder was added after the child’s death, making Olawusi a wanted fugitive. The Providence Police Department, in collaboration with the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office, reached out to the U.S. Marshals Service in November 2017 for assistance in locating Olawusi.
A subsequent investigation revealed that Olawusi had fled the United States in June 2017, using his Nigerian passport to board a flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. Investigators believe that Olawusi may have received help from family members in Nigeria and that he could be a threat to other children, given the violent nature of the crime.
Don Freeman, Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal, urged the public to come forward with any information that could help locate Olawusi. “We are committed to bringing this individual to justice for the abuse and murder of an innocent child,” Freeman said. “Olawusi fled the country to avoid facing justice, but we will continue our efforts to find him and ensure he is held accountable for his actions.”
Freeman’s sentiments, stating, “Mr. Olawusi is wanted for heinous crimes and has fled the country to escape justice. We have placed him on our 15 Most Wanted list due to the severity of his actions and the threat he poses to the community. We will use every available resource to track him down and ensure he is brought to justice.”
Olawusi, who also goes by the alias Olekun Olawusi, is described as being 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing approximately 185 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.
