Federal Govt pushes for alternative Electricity sources to support National Grid

Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, revealed that the Federal Government is proactively exploring alternative energy sources to act as backups, with the goal of preventing future collapses of the National Grid.

Speaking at a stakeholders meeting with the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) at their headquarters in Kano, Adelabu underscored the critical role of state governments in the effective implementation of alternative electricity solutions.

He stated, “Distribution companies must provide reliable services, and consumers should utilise electricity efficiently.”

Highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing electricity supply, he stressed that improving the power sector is crucial for revitalising the industrial landscape and bolstering the nation’s economy.

Adelabu expressed his desire to collaborate with key stakeholders to identify and tackle challenges that impede optimal performance. He pointed out the urgent need to upgrade the transmission infrastructure, which heavily depends on the Shiroro and Jos channels.

“This radial system puts the northern region at risk of power disruptions whenever issues arise with these lines,” he warned.

To address these vulnerabilities, he proposed establishing independent power sources within state metropolises to support the national grid. He noted that exploring alternative power solutions is essential to mitigate future collapses of the National Grid.

“This proactive strategy will ensure the region is prepared for any challenges, including vandalism or potential grid failures,” he concluded.
