Court Prohibits VIO from Impounding Vehicles or Fining Motorists
The Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday ruled that the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) has no legal authority to impound vehicles or impose fines on motorists.
This ruling was the outcome of a lawsuit filed by human rights lawyer Abubakar Marshal of Falana and Falana Chambers, challenging the actions of the VIO.
The court declared that the VIO, under the supervision of the Federal Capital Territory Minister, lacks the statutory power to stop, confiscate, or fine vehicles.
The court further issued a perpetual injunction, preventing the VIO from infringing on citizens’ rights to movement and property without legal grounds.
