The former monarch, who abdicated in January in favour of her son King Frederik, was scheduled to attend an event at Aarhus University on Friday but has now withdrawn.
Margrethe was last seen attending the Rungstedlund Prize 2024 at the Karen Blixen Museum on Monday, Mail Online reports.
Despite her abdication, Margrethe continues to perform royal duties and remains active alongside King Frederik. The queen had announced her resignation in a New Year’s Eve speech, citing health concerns, including back surgery in February 2023.
She remarked, “It went well, thanks to the skilled healthcare staff who took care of me.
“Of course, the operation also gave rise to thinking about the future—whether the time had come to leave the responsibility to the next generation.”
Margrethe retains the title of Her Majesty and can act as regent if King Frederik, Queen Mary, or Crown Prince Christian are abroad or unavailable. A week after her abdication, she attended a church service at Aarhus Cathedral with King Frederik and Queen Mary.
Margrethe, born in 1940, has enjoyed broad support in Denmark. Known for her warmth and creativity, she has been a popular public figure.
Her reign included significant moments such as the removal of titles from her younger son Prince Joachim’s children and strong public engagements.
She was also noted for her close relationship with her third cousin, Queen Elizabeth II, and was celebrated for her contributions to Danish life and culture.
Margrethe’s popularity extended to her involvement in various public activities, including visiting Danish troops in Afghanistan in 2011.
