Flood Disaster: University Of Maiduguri Suspends Lectures, Closes All Offices Indefinitely
The university said the decision was taken to safeguard staff and students and to assess the situation before further necessary actions are taken.
The management of University of Maiduguri has suspended all lectures and closed its offices temporarily due to the devastating flood disaster affecting Maiduguri and its environment.
This was announced in a statement issued on September 10, 2024, by the university Registrar, Ahmad A. Lawan, stating the directive is with immediate effect until the situation improves.
The university said the decision was taken to safeguard staff and students and to assess the situation before further necessary actions are taken.
The Management said it expressed sympathy to all staff and students affected by the flood disaster and prayed for a swift end to the crisis.
The statement reads: āThis is to inform all staff and students that in view of the devastating flood disaster that is affecting Maiduguri and its environment, the University Management is hereby suspending all lectures in the University and closing offices temporarily with immediate effect until the situation improves.
āThese measures are taken by the Management to safeguard staff and students and to assess the situation before further necessary actions are taken.
āThe Management is extending its heartfelt sympathy to all staff and students affected by the flood disaster and pray God to forestall future occurrence.ā
SaharaReporters earlier reported that hundreds of residents were trapped as a devastating flood hit Maiduguri and other surrounding communities during the early hours of Tuesday.
Some residents who spoke to SaharaReporters on Tuesday morning confirmed that the widespread flooding had submerged several houses, major roads, and official buildings including the Emirās palace.
SaharaReporters gathered further the flood has affected socioeconomic activities in the state with schools, markets and workplaces being shut down indefinitely. Many farms were also destroyed by this disaster.
