The details of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) emergency closed door meeting following the arrest of its national president, Joe Ajaero, by the Department of State Services (DSS) have emerged.

Ajaero was detained on September 9, 2024, at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, where he was preparing to travel to the UK for official duties.

In response, the NLC held an urgent meeting of its National Administrative Council (NAC) to address the incident.

The NLC strongly condemned Ajaero’s detention and demanded his immediate and unconditional release, viewing the arrest as an attack on all Nigerian workers.

A communique issued by the NLC, signed by deputy president Adeyanju Adewale, called for heightened alert among its affiliates, state councils, and the public.

The NLC also warned against further suppressing dissenting voices and reiterated its commitment to defending workers’ rights and freedoms.

In addition to calling for Ajaero’s release, the NLC has demanded a reversal of the recent petrol price increase to N617 per litre.

An emergency meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) has been scheduled for September 10, 2024, to strategize and determine additional actions.

Resolutions from today’s emergency meeting of the NLC following Joe Ajaero’s arrest:

– The NLC demands the immediate and unconditional release of Comrade Joe Ajaero before 12 midnight today.

– The NLC also demands the immediate reversal of the current hike in the price of petrol to N617/Litre.

– The NLC places all its affiliates, State Councils, Civil society allies, and the Nigerian populace on red alert.

– The NLC summons an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) by 9:00 AM tomorrow, the 10th day of September, 2024
