You may be wondering why some people who are in committed relationships will not get married this year. Particularly when you believe that after several years of courtship, marriage should be the logical next step, but it may not be.

Perhaps they don’t think marriage is important since some people think it’s complicated, strange, or outdated. Also, the expectation or pressure from society to be married may make some people who think marriage is a good idea dislike getting married. In Nigeria, people’s decisions concerning marriage are greatly influenced by numbers 1 and 2 in this article.

Here are 5 reasons some people will not get married this year

 

5. The perception of loss of freedom
One of the biggest fears about marriage is the loss of freedom to freely make decisions for all aspects of their life can be why some never marry. Freedom to indulge in their favourite hobbies and activities, to hang out as they like without someone complaining.

4. Fears about a potential divorce
There are a whole lot of people out there who have witnessed the emotional and economic damage divorce brings to the family. People not marrying could be because they presume that a divorce is imminent.

Some of these people may have grown up in a broken home, or they have experienced it and don’t want to ever find themselves in such a vulnerable position.

There are plenty of divorced people out there who are yet to heal from the wound and have gone ahead to propagate the need to stay single, while some have had successful second marriages.

3. Unwilling to make sacrifices
Some people avoid marriage because they love their self-centered lifestyle and are not ready to shift grounds or make sacrifices that require faithfulness, an accounting of your time when not with your spouse, and emotional investment.

People staying single can often be attributed to their lack of willingness to make adjustments to accommodate a person in their life.

2. Financial Instability
Most people always want to attain a level of financial stability before getting married to avoid the popular question of what you are bringing to the table. Also, Economic challenges, such as job losses, inflation, and stagnating wages, make marriage unattractive.

1. High Cost of Getting Married
Getting married, especially in Nigeria, is not attainable without spending a huge amount of money apart from the bride price. In some parts of the country, their culture does not create room for low marriages.

They spend huge amounts of money buying items on the marriage list, and the cost of catering for guests on the occasion is alarming.

For many, the pressure to meet these societal or family expectations for an extravagant celebration delays or discourages marriage altogether.
