At least 35 people were killed, and another 43 injured on Monday after a driver rammed his car into a crowd outside the running track at Zhuhai sports centre in Guangdong province, near Macau, southeastern China.

Video footage posted on social media showed dozens lying motionless on the ground, many wearing exercise attire.

“A passenger car hit a number of pedestrians at the sports centre in Xiangzhou District of Zhuhai City and drove away,” the police stated.

Witnesses said the victims included “a group of middle-aged and elderly people who were exercising on the track,” an area later secured by investigating officers, Mail Online reports.

Police have detained a 62-year-old man named Fan. The motive behind the incident remains unclear, and authorities have not yet determined if it was an attack or an accident.

The sports centre, built for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, has since suspended activities, stating online that a “reopening time is to be determined.”

Fatal traffic incidents are not uncommon in China, often attributed to lax safety measures.
