10th NASS: APC Govs Raise Alarm Over Alleged Attempts By Aspirants To Offer $1 Million Per Vote
Under the auspices of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), governors running on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have expressed concern over reports that certain parliamentarians running for office in the 10th National Assembly may have tried to buy their way into office by offering up to $1 million in cash.
News organizations learned that two candidates for Speaker of the House of Representatives and Senate President are willing to raise the threshold for bribery to as much as $1 million per person and vote, according to APC governors.
The governors claimed that they were aware of “rumors” that two lawmakers, one running for Senate President and the other for Speaker of the House of Representatives, had expressed a willingness to offer between $500,000 and $1 million per lawmaker in exchange for votes in a memo addressed to the governor-elect, Bola Tinubu, as the competition for the 10th NASS leadership positions heated up.
According to Premium Times, the APC governors claimed the two candidates engaged in the alleged bribery incident were APC members while refusing to name them.
In their memo, they said “Indeed, it is being rumoured that one aspirant for the Senate Presidency and another for Speakership are willing to offer as much as $500,000 to $1 million per vote. Opposition party members of the National Assembly are being courted with the likelihood of the 2015 situation presenting itself if care is not taken.”
